IUD Insertion & Removal
Dr Ayla Polat-Kaya offers IUD insertions & removals.
What is an IUD? An IUD, or intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD), is a form of contraception placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is a small plastic device shaped like a 'T' with plastic strings attached. IUDs can be hormonal, releasing the hormone progesterone (levonorgestrel) into the uterus, or non-hormonal.
Why Consider an IUD? An IUD is a long-acting, reliable, safe, and reversible form of contraception. It can provide effective contraception for up to 10 years after insertion and can be removed at any time, ensuring an immediate return to fertility.
Other Benefits of IUDs Hormonal IUDs are also used to treat heavy and painful periods. They offer several benefits over other contraceptive methods, including:
- Reduction in menstrual bleeding (hormonal IUD)
- Decrease in menstrual pain (hormonal IUD)
- Reduced risk of endometrial cancer (hormonal IUD)
- Elimination of adverse effects associated with estrogen-based contraceptives
- Cost-effectiveness compared to the pill over the long term
- No need to remember daily intake, resulting in higher contraceptive reliability compared to oral contraceptives or condoms
However, IUDs do not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
IUD Insertion Procedure IUD insertion is a safe procedure that takes about 5 minutes and is typically performed in the doctor's office. The process is slightly more involved than a Cervical Screening Test/Pap smear and uses similar devices, such as a speculum.
During the procedure, we will:
- Insert a speculum into the vagina
- Clean the cervix with an antiseptic solution
- Align the cervical canal and uterine cavity using appropriate instruments
- Measure the depth of the uterine cavity with a tool
- Insert the IUD
- Trim the strings of the device
This straightforward procedure ensures the effective placement of the IUD for long-term contraception.
